Overview - Recreation PDF Print E-mail

The Kalamazoo River Watershed Council receives three common questions in our day to day activities.  Here are the questions, our typical responses, and a glimpse of what the future holds.  For more information, see the recreation links on the left side menu.

Q) Can I fish?
A) Yes, but you should follow public health guidelines to understand the type and amount of fish you can eat.
Outlook) We fully expect, and will continue to work to ensure that someday all fish will be safe for unrestricted human consumption.

Q) Can I swim in the river?
A) Yes.  Public health officials do not restrict human contact with the river.
Outlook) Ongoing contamination cleanup, stormwater runoff reductions, soil erosion reduction, smart land use, and other management activities in the watershed should continue to improve water quality.

Q) Can I access the river?
A)
Yes.
Outlook) There are exciting projects in the works to ensure that people have reasonable access to the river for recreation.  Many of these projects will generate maps, and we will make those available to the public as they generated.
