The Kalamazoo River Watershed Council advocates a restored river, free-flowing wherever possible, with abundant opportunities for public access, swimming, fishing and paddling.  Useless remnants of old dams that retain contaminated sediments should be removed, with appropriate remediation measures.  PCB contamination should be reduced to the point where the fish are as safe to eat as in similar rivers.  Point– and non-point sources of water pollution should be controlled using a diverse portfolio of technologies so that nutrients, pathogens, and sediments in the river are minimized.  Fish and wildlife in and along the river should be restored to bring back native species and encourage healthy populations of keystone species such as Bald Eagles and River Otters.  A restored Kalamazoo River would be an economic and social asset to the region, enhancing riparian property values and attracting recreation and tourism on and along the river.
